What to expect at your first music lesson

A first lesson can feel like a big unknown, especially for a nervous child or a returning adult. It shouldn't. At Sonora the trial is designed to be warm and low-pressure, and knowing what's coming makes it easier for everyone. Here's how the 45 minutes usually go.

Meeting and listening

The teacher starts by getting to know the student, not testing them. A few friendly questions about what drew you to the instrument, what you listen to, and what you're hoping for. For a complete beginner there's nothing to prepare. For someone with experience, the teacher will listen to you play a little to understand where you are.

Hands on the instrument

This is the heart of it. Whatever the level, you'll actually play. The teacher might guide a first sound, introduce a small idea, or work on a phrase you already know. The goal is for you to leave having made music, however simple, and to feel what good teaching is like in real time.

Talking goals and a plan

Near the end, the teacher steps back and talks through what they noticed and where you could go. This is where the trial pays off: you get an honest read on a starting point, a suitable pathway, and a realistic sense of pace. There's no obligation to continue.

What to bring

Not much:

• Yourself, and your child if the lesson is for them.
• Any instrument you already own, though we have instruments in the studio if you don't.
• Any questions about lessons, exams, or fees. We're happy to answer all of them.

After the trial

If it's a good fit, the teacher recommends a pathway, whether that's graded exams, performance, advanced study, or our Junior Academy, and we settle on a regular weekly slot. If it isn't quite right, you'll still leave with useful guidance and no pressure either way.
