Val Chong

Val is Sonora's founder and Artistic Director, a Singaporean soprano and contemporary singer whose career has taken her to stages across Singapore and abroad. She won First Prize at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory Voice Concerto Competition (2025), First Prize at the North International Music Competition (2019), and Gold at the 7th SMTA Performers' Festival (2018).

Her operatic roles span Lucy in The Telephone, Serpina in La Serva Padrona, Zerlina in Don Giovanni, and Despina in Così fan tutte, and as a versatile pop singer she performed alongside Josh Groban on his Bridges tour. She holds Grade 8 certification in piano, violin, and cello, and is pursuing her Master of Music in Voice and Opera at the New England Conservatory, having graduated with First Class Honours from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory under Professor Alan Bennett.

I believe anyone can sing, and that the right tools and guidance are what support a singer's journey. Being a voice teacher means being a vocal technician, identifying, diagnosing, and solving challenges that cannot be seen by the eye. Above all, singing is a joy and a privilege. I find great joy in seeing students develop a genuine passion for the music they sing, and discover their own capacity to convey emotions that everyday life so often overlooks.
